Mississippi John Hurt

Mississippi John Hurt and Elmore James

Mississippi John Hurt was a soft spoken musician that made a record in 1929 and then went on to work on his farm in Avalon. He just spent a majority of his life raising his family. Then during the 1960's folk explosion he was rediscovered and lived out the rest of his life recording and playing music until his death.

  1. Such nice pictures!!! Mississippi John Hurt is one of the true greats; one of the foundations of American music--right up there with Hank Williams, the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, and select few others, oh yeah, and Woody Guthrie of course. I've never heard anyone who could play guitar like Mississippi could. I probably learned more about fingerpicking from listening to his records than from anyone/anything else, and although I can't pick anything nearly as cool as he could, I hope some of that influence is discernable in what I do.

  2. by the way: Some of my tunes can be heard here: http://www.reverbnation.com/chrisedwards . The newer stuff I'm recording is a lot more old-time country blues flavored.

  3. Thanks for the comment. Yeah I discovered Mississippi John Hurt about 6 years ago and fell in love with his music. It is crazy to think that if it wasn't for the folk revival he would of just lived out his life as a farmer. If you are interested in different guitar playing types Nick Drake is great, I never trust allmusic's reviews but check out some samples there http://www.allmusic.com/artist/nick-drake-mn0000336783 .

I dig your tunes when I have more time I will listen to them all. Keep up the good fight.
